Turmeric is a spice from the plant. It is also known as Turmeric, Curcumin, Halada, Haldi, Haridra, Indian Crocus, Nisha, Pian Jiang Huang, Rajani, Bourbon, Crocus, Batalita Crocus, and Indian Crocus. It should not be confused with Java turmeric root (Curcuma zedoaria). It is often used to flavour or colour curries, mustard, and other dishes. Its root is also used as an alternative medicine. It has recently been used medicinally as a potential agent for lowering blood cholesterol levels, relieving the pain of osteoarthritis, or relieving the itching associated with chronic kidney disease. Other unexplored uses include reducing the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, prediabetes, tuberculosis, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and heart attack after surgery. It is often sold as an herbal dietary supplement. Many herbal compounds are not subject to manufacturing standards, and some commercial supplements are contaminated with toxic metals or other ingredients. Herbs/supplements should be from reputable sources to minimize the risk of contamination.

It is a plant from the ginger family, originally from Southeast Asia and is cultivated commercially there, especially in India. The rhizome (underground stem) is used as a culinary herb and in traditional medicine. Historically, it has been used in Ayurveda and other traditional Indian medical systems, as well as in East Asian medical systems such as traditional Chinese medicine. It is used in India to treat disorders of the skin, upper respiratory tract, joints, and digestive system. Today, it is used as a cleansing dietary supplement for a variety of diseases, including arthritis, colds, respiratory infections, allergies, liver disease, depression, and more. It is a very healthy and immune booster spice and an important ingredient in curry. Curcumin is the main ingredient of turmeric and the effects of turmeric are believed to be due to curcuminoid substances. Gives turmeric its yellow color. Turmeric supplements are made from dried rhizomes and usually contain a mixture of curcuminoids. It is also used to produce powders for skin diseases.

Golden Turmeric Latte

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) unsweetened milk, any flavour
  • 1 tablespoon of ground or powdered turmeric
  • 1 small piece of freshly grated ginger or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • A little black pepper (don't forget the paprika)
  • Honey and maple syrup to your liking.         
  • All ingredients should be combined in a small pot or saucepan before being brought to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer the mixture for 10 minutes to let the flavour develop. After that, pour it into your favourite mug and sip! (Add a pinch of cinnamon on top of your latte for a little extra-ness.)

Ginger Turmeric Tea

In addition to being loaded with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory effects, and a significant amount of vitamin C, this tasty liquid can be drunk hot or cold according to your preferences (or the weather!).

Ingredients

  • 6 cups of water
  • medium, thinly sliced (approximately 2 inches) ginger leaf
  • medium, thinly sliced (approximately 2 inches) curcumin root
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • To taste, honey is optional
    Put the water, pepper, ginger, turmeric, and half of the lemon segments in a pot or saucepan. The mixture should be heated until it boils, and then it should be simmered for 5 to 10 minutes. Then strain into a glass, top with a fresh lemon slice, and if desired, add honey to taste. 

The mixture can alternatively be strained into a glass, jug, or another storage container to chill and serve later over ice.

Curry with Mushroom (Vegetarian)

There are countless ways to utilize this product as a spice in food, but curries are where it is most widely used. Traditional curries are typically a go-to comfort food, but this mushroom variation is perfect for both vegans and meat eaters. It also contains a tonne of fresh herbs and fruit for a tasty and substantial supper.

Ingredients

  • Button mushrooms 600g
  • 3 big tomatoes, cut and peeled
  • Finely grated ginger, 1 tablespoon
  • 6 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons of olive or ghee
  • Fennel seeds, 1 teaspoon
  • 0.5 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Ground coriander, 3 teaspoons
  • Ground turmeric, 1/2 tsp.
  • A pinch of chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Muscovado or brown sugar (to taste)
  • Cooked basmati rice and coriander leaves

In a food processor, chop tomatoes, ginger, and garlic (or mince if you don't have a food processor). Cook the fennel and cumin over medium-high heat for 20 seconds, then add the mushrooms. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, then add the coriander, turmeric, red pepper, and salt. Mix well and add the tomato, ginger and garlic mixture. Mix well, cover and reduce the heat. Cook the mixture for 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Add sugar to taste if needed. Serve with rice and enjoy.
